TECHNICAL TADA SHEET (TDS)

1. Methyl eugenol is a natural product present in number of plants in about 1-5% such as nutmeg, pimento, lemongrass, tarragon, basil, star anise, clove leaf and buds and fennel. In cloves, it is present in about 10-15%.

2. Methyl eugenol is used as flavor and fragrance ingredient.

3. Methyl Eugenol feeding can increase the effectiveness of sterile insect technique (SIT) manifolds.

4. It is used as a flavouring agent in jellies, baked goods, non-alcoholic beverages, chewing gum, relish and ice cream, and as a fragrance in several cosmetic products.

5. It is mainly used as pheromone for attracting male fruit flies such as Bactrocera spp in mango orchards.

6. Fruit flies damages the fruits/ flowers/ leaves of all kind of plants.

7. HOW methyl eugenol works as pheromone: Use of organic or inorganic pesticides/ insecticides will contaminate the fruits/ flowers/ leaves with the pesticides. So methyl eugenol is used as pest attractant by formulating with pesticide/ insecticide which is put in a pheromone traps. The attracted male Fruit flies, trapped into traps and dies in the trap. Later, died pests will be destroyed.

8. Prepare a pheromone lure in the following manner: Mix Ethyl Alcohol/Solvent -60 Ml + Cuelure-40 ml+ Pesticide/ Insecticide-20 ml (In the ratio of 6:4:2). Mix thoughrouly for 30-45 min. Then evoporate or distill off ethyl alcol completely to get a pasty mass.

b. Spraying: For spraying on different crops use 2 to 2.5 gram powder in one liter of water followed by one additional spray at an interval of 15 days.

c. Dose: Dilute 2 to 2.5 gm of Oenanthol Bisulphate in 1 liter of water and use 200 to 250 liter of water per acre through foliar spray (400 to 450 g in 200-250 ltr water).

d. Apply thrice with an interval of 3 to 4 days in case of severe attack.
